Baby Bank Network has been running for 6 months now and as most of you know we’ve had to limit the amount of donations we could accept due to a lack of storage space. Big Yellow Self Storage in St Phillips offered us the use of one of the storage units, about the size of a garage and a half, for free for our first 6 months. This space was invaluable in getting us set up and started with helping local families in need. However it didn’t take us long to exceed this space thanks to the kind donations of community spirited people like you.
After months of searching we have finally, as you may have guessed, found some bigger space that we could rent and expand our donations system. The problem facing us next was how could we turn this disused space in to a functioning Headquarters and move all of our stock from Big Yellow as fast as possible and with little cost.
This is where we called on our invaluable volunteers! We started with a good clean, half a day of general cleaning and hoovering several months (possibly years) worth of spiders webs, followed by four more decorating sessions completed by 7 fabulous volunteers. A big shout out to John Gibson from Dulux on Stokes Croft who kindly donated the 30 litres of paint we needed. Alongside this Eva from Born donated 15 metres worth of racking so we can now have a beautifully organised place for everything to go.
This brings us up to about last week at which point we still weren’t sure how we were actually going to get the stock from Big Yellow to Southmead. Sure, bags of clothes in the boot would be okay, but prams, cots, moses baskets, baby baths are a different story. Again we put the call out on our Facebook Page and made a few calls and some heroes came to our rescue. One of our followers Charlie kindly offered the use of her beloved Batfink campervan alongside Enterprise in Brislington loaning us a van free of charge.
So Sunday was the today, after lots of volunteers packing up stock on Saturday another team of 11 have helped load, drive and unload all day today. The Baby Bank Network HQ is looking good.
What’s next? Well we still need a few key items to help set up our new HQ, in particular;
• two oil filled, electric heaters,
• one (maybe two) large, sturdy trestle tables,
• a de-humidifier,
• Storage boxes with lids and lots of them!
These could be bought and donated or £15 in Tesco clubcard vouchers will currently buy us 8 storage boxes so if any of you would like to donate your clubcard vouchers to us we would be more than happy to take them off your hands!
We have truly seen the generosity of our community and could not have achieved any of this without your help. Every piece of volunteering, however small, enables us to help more and more families and babies across Bristol.
